UOB Malaysia is a trustworthy bank that emphasises values and principles in everything it does. That said, many view UOBM as a bank which caters heavily towards the affluent Malaysian Chinese population.
Having recently celebrated its 80 year anniversary, UOB decided it was time to open up a new portfolio of products to reach out to Malaysia’s majority of Muslims. This new portfolio of Shariah-compliant products and services is now known as UOB Islamic.
We were called in to assist in developing their UOB Islamic web portal. One of the main challenges was how to define the UOB Islamic portal, so that it could be differentiated from UOB’s conventional banking portal, without straying too far from UOB’s core principles and messaging.
After laying down an easy-to-navigate sitemap, we pin-pointed a few key elements which would help make UOB Islamic more recognisable.
Another thing we needed to take into consideration were the type of photos to utilise throughout the website. Currently, UOB’s main website emphasises truthful and genuine photos, often accompanied by a human element. The photos to be chosen for the Islamic portal would also need to be somewhat similar.
We decided to choose photos that showcase Islamic culture. The photos range from Islamic architecture to housing fixtures and decorations. Malay talents were also featured across the portal.
To further differentiate UOB Islamic from its conventional banking counterpart, we incorporated an Islamic pattern and motif into key visuals. The motif, which acts almost like a watermark, is placed consistently on the top right corner. The motif is more complementary, rather than disruptive.
All icons for the UOB Islamic web portal were differentiated from UOB’s conventional banking using a simple red ‘i’ to denote Islamic. All icons are also in UOB’s classic Red and Blue.
Support & Services
We maintained UOB’s familiar reliable and genuine feel throughout the website by keeping the messaging similar – that UOB is at the ready to provide you convenience and simplicity for all your banking needs.
